Hostel Appeal

Due to fears for the security of the students at the Barathi Hostel in Narikudi, ODAM seeks to relocate the Barathi Hostel to Tiruchuli. Despite these difficulties ODAM  is determined to use this move to expand the education project and create new opportunities for sustainable development which will benefit the whole community. Please help this innovative community development plan to take off!

India’s Tamil Nadu State is a land of contrasts; although investors pour money into the cities many rural areas remain unchanged. Narikudi is a small village in the rural east, here it seems that little has changed over time. Until recently many girls stayed at home helping with the chores or working long hours in the mills.

Over the last 17 years, ODAM has strived to change this through the provision of education and rural development projects. The project had humble beginnings as ODAM’s staff knocked on villagers’ doors and persuaded them to allow their daughters to attend ODAM’s KGBV School. Since then many girls have graduated and 32 are now being accommodated in ODAM’s Barathi Hostel while they attend the local secondary school.

Despite these great achievements, age old social and cultural prejudices are impossible to eliminate overnight and in order to provide safe and accommodation for these students, ODAM have been forced to move the students to nearby Tiruchuli The girls are temporarily situated in the ODAM office and are settling in well to their new schools. ODAM is determined to use these difficulties as an opportunity for further expansion and improvement.

Accommodating the students in the ODAM Office can only provide a short term solution as it impedes ODAM’s ability to hold staff meetings, work with SHG members, and host conferences. Further, due to the increased popularity and success of the hostel project, an additional 20 students are expected to join the programme in the next academic year.

To remedy this dilemma, ODAM has designed an alternative, long-term plan that will be more sustainable. It will not only help promote secondary education in the region, but also allow ODAM to expand its rural development programmes to benefit the whole community But we need YOU to make it possible!

The building will provide a hostel function to safely accommodate the secondary school girls on a permanent basis, while offering additional space for community projects.

ODAM wants to develop a training centre for the community, which will incorporate girls’ education, sustainable agriculture and rural development projects under one roof. The potential applications for this space include:

  • •  Vocational and employment training for self-help group members
  • •  Venue for sustainable development and climate change seminars
  • •  Secure food storage for poor smallholder farmers
  • •  Seed Stocks and agricultural tools distribution centre

ODAM is committed to improving the lives for the rural poor, those excluded from government services, abandoned by family networks, or suffering from disabilities and other ailments. The new building will be able to serve our girls and the broader community as well.

£5000 will allow ODAM to secure the land to develop this centre;  draw up the architectural plans for the building and renovate the office to accommodate the hostel girls in the short term while providing ODAM with time to secure the necessary grants to complete the project.

The project is big, but so are ODAM’s goals. Each day, ODAM works to directly help the poorest members of the district, those who have fallen through the cracks in the government support projects. 100% of your donation goes to buy the land, construct this building, and change the future for generations of rural families.
